Billing and Time Entry Tips

Billing Tips

  • Court is a minimum of an hour
  • Everything else is usually a minimum of .2 other than quick text messages
  • We can’t bill for “discuss with lawyer” that’s part of selling point is the team approach, so please don’t bill for discussions with other team members, with the exception if it’s trial prep, or something comes out of it then feel free to bill.  The issue is that if you forgot something you probably can’t bill for it, but if you are giving big directions for a trial or motion bill baby bill!
  • While I appreciate the detail, we do not need to have incredibly detailed bills.  For example, don’t put:
    • “ call from client regarding if she should move in with parents or stay in the house where she would prefer to stay since it’s bigger and has her Furnishings, I told her I would discuss with Jason and get back to her”.  INSTEAD:
    • “ Call from client”
  • Don’t bill for “forwarding emails”
  • Don’t put “drive time”. No need to remind the client we are billing so much hour to sit in a car, just put “attend hearing”
  • On the issue of billing for “reviewing” I don’t like having the staff bill for that unless it’s part of a larger project examples:
    • “review discovery demand and draft response” or “ review documents from Opposing attorney and organize into trial exhibits”.
