Certificate of Dissolution
Like the divorce decree (Findings of Fact, Conclusions of Law, Judgment and Decree), the Certificate of Dissolution signed by a judge can be used to prove that a divorce is final. Specifically, the Certificate of Dissolution allows clients to have a short (1-2 page) document that indicates when their divorce was final and if their name was changed as part of the divorce. This way, client’s don’t have to provide a full 30 page MTA with lots of personal/sensitive information just to prove they are divorced and/or that their name was changed. See Minn. Stat. ยง 518.148.

The majority of counties will prepare their own Certificate of Dissolution themselves and file it, so we do not need to complete it. However, there are some counties that require one of the attorneys to complete the Certificate of Dissolution and file it with the Court for the Judge to sign. If you aren’t sure whether we have to prepare one or not, you can always contact court administration and ask them.
Counties where the attorney must complete the Certificate of Dissolution: Waseca, Le Sueur, Nicollet
